Who we are
Bridge-Builders — a marketing name of The Pocket Testament League in the UK — is an Evangelical Christian organisation dedicated to helping Christians share their faith. We do not represent any particular denomination, but we belong to the Evangelical Alliance UK. The name ‘Bridge-Builders’ reflects our desire to help Christians connect with people who have not yet heard the good news of Jesus Christ.
The Pocket Testament League has motivated Christians to read, carry and share the Word of God since 1893. Started as the vision of a teenage girl named Helen Cadbury, The Pocket Testament League provides resources to help believers develop a lifestyle of biblical discipline and personal evangelism. The ministry also encourages people to support others who are sharing their faith, through a unique sponsorship program in which sponsors actually receive feedback from those they sponsor showing how lives are being changed.
Our members have shared more than 110 million Gospels during the history of this Christian outreach ministry, forever changing millions of lives around the world. The ministry is designed to equip Christians who are serious about sharing their faith with others.
We also think of ourselves as a spiritual ‘food-bank’, making bite-sized portions of God’s Word available to those who are spiritually hungry. And just like a normal food-bank, we depend on donations and volunteers! We need gifts in the form of financial donations, legacies, and grants in order to continue our 150-year ministry of providing gospels for outreach ministry. We also need Christians to become bridge-builders themselves by reaching out to neighbours and friends. If you’d like to donate, please click here. You can also register to receive our news or order gospel booklets.
The Problem We Are Addressing, and Vision That We Have
The UK is becoming more and more secular. More than half the population now has no faith. Churches are declining, and there are fewer believers. We are losing our Biblical foundation, and our culture is paying a heavy price. We have had massive immigration, and many of these new people do not share our Biblical values. How will they ever know what those values are, unless we share the Word of God with them? Many people have a false impression about what the Bible says because they have never actually read it for themselves.
In order to turn this around, we need to go back to basics. The Bible tells us that the Word of God is a seed (Luke 8:11). If we want to have a bigger harvest of Bible believing Christians in the UK, then we need to get serious about planting a lot more seed. The Pocket Testament League’s vision is to recruit 100,000 volunteer members who will pledge to read the Bible daily, to carry a Gospel of John in a dedicated pocket (backpack, purse, jacket, etc) everywhere they go, and to wait for God to give them an opportunity to share it. Only by planting the Word of God in a massive way, one-to-one, can we have an impact in the UK. Will it work? Yes, it works. This is actually God’s model for growth to build His Kingdom (found in Matthew 13, Mark 4, Luke 8). We will walk along side you and help you every step of the way. Time is short, and we need to get on with it!
